April 2011 -- Scandinavian Design

Scandinavian Design is increasingly popular for many reasons. People continue to love Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, sculpture and jewelry and art in 2011. Demand has increased because Scandinavian Design offers simplicity, beauty and function. An additional appeal is price point. Vintage pieces are readily available in mostly good to excellent condition. Even after 60+ years, pieces look up-to-date modern. Jens Quistgaard's 1970s Lovig Desk can easily accommodate a computer or IPad and still have room for other objects. Danish 1960s Rosewood Nesting Tables are portable and readily at hand when needed. Hans Wagner's 1964 CH 07 Lounge Chair is eye-catching and can easily be the only piece a room needs-- beautifully sculptural and extremely comfortable. Danish 1960s Teak Occasional Chairs are tailored and useful. What's the appeal of Danish 1960s End Tables?

Great to use as bed side tables, don't take up much space and have a usable lamp surface. Scandinavian designers often used Brazilian Rosewood in dressers, desks, end tables, dining table and chairs because their simple design showcased rosewood patterning extremely well. Some of the most comfortable sofas were initially constructed in Sweden. The Swedish 1960s DUX Sofas are both beautiful and great for lounging. Scandinavians' small living spaces required clever and efficient case pieces for storage. Danish 1950s-1960s Teak Dressers are classics. Many Scandinavian designers such as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Claus Bonderup & Torsten Thorup, Louis Poulsen, Verner Panton & Klint are but a few who created some of the most innovative 1950s-1970s lighting design. These designers used wood, metals, plastics, wire, and fiberglass in pendants, table and floor lamps. Wherever mid century Scandinavian pieces are placed in a home or office, they are good and true.
