Metro Modern's Collection of California Plein Air Art, circa 1920s-1950s

The collection acquired over 30 years includes both California landscapes and coastal scapes by listed artists such as Ray Strong,
Edward Marion Langley, Leslie Sherman, Herbert Henry Smithers, John Patrick Douglas, Thomas Fisk Goff, Harry Lewis Bailey, Charles Arthur Dunn and other painters. Paintings show coast lines, central valleys or deserts from Northern California to Palm Springs.

Artists worked out-of-doors, "plein air", to capture the changing, fleeting light which altered the landscape's colors dramatically from pale blues to magentas to lavenders at dusk. Paintings range in size from 3"x4" to 28"x 24".
