Mural Painting has long been a staple of Richmond urban streets, particularly in the Fan District. The Art Department at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Fan neighborhood not only graduates many artists, it also creates an awareness and appreciation of art in the general public. As in the past, wall murals may advertise a business, make a social comment or depict whimsy or fantasy. Some mural painters are academically trained while others are self taught. Many in Richmond commission mural painters to enhance either their businesses or their buildings. One very talented and long time legal or illegal mural painter, paints some murals for clients and some to suit his fancy. Trask murals have a nostalgic quality— Richmond’s long gone trolley cars or farming vistas. Mural Paintings can be enjoyed while walking, biking or driving in the various neighborhoods. There are so many murals appearing monthly, that people can now take walking tours and focus on specific streets in specific neighborhoods such as the Fan, Oregon Hill or Church Hill for their viewing pleasure.
