March 2009 - Spring Conversation Makers

March brings a sense of renewal and an urgency to reshape our interior spaces. If we can't travel, we can bring faraway places into our homes-- with a piece here and a piece there. An interesting treasure allows for prolonged discussion, a retelling of its history, and a reaffirmation of its uniqueness. Wow! It goes great with cocktails or sweet tea. Artist- made wall weavings and tapestries from 1960s and 1970s are beautiful and add a different texture to our walls. Donald Drumm's serving ware from the 1970s make finger food glamorous.

No magazine goes overlooked when placed in an unusual or intricate 1950s French magazine rack. Lagardo Tackett, although famous for California Pottery, created some interesting stash jars in 1959. How weird to serve tea in Argentinian sterling silver gourds and sipping straws! A 1920s Chinese Bronze Buddha Bust is serene and soothing.Architectural and animal watercolors, colorful ceramic horses offer delightful vistas. Appetizers look exotic when bathed in Salviati's handmade glass votive holders. A new handmade Indonesian lampshade spices up even the most ordinary lamp! Vintage weaving and textile tools provide endless admiration and scrutiny. Joseph Frank English's 1980s Chinatown Serigraph adds flavor to any serving of spring rolls-- people may even know the buildings depicted. Francoise Coriat's 1950s "Fantasy of Flowers" Tile Wall Hanging adds cheer. As they enter, guests can throw their hats or berets on the 1950s French Steel Coat Rack. L.D. Basso's deep trough Wood Bowl from 1969 is great for serving tortilla chips.

Bicycle seats are not all alike, and the Uni and Elina samples from the 1970s will charm biking enthusiasts. An evening would not be complete without a careful examination of Fanch Ledan's "Interior With Four Picassos" from 1999. Guests might ask, "Whose Parisian apartment? Who is invited? What church is across the Seine? Name that bridge. What are we eating?" These interesting pieces can elevate the appetite and create good conversations.
