Mid Century House # 6
5518 Riverside Drive

This house is perched above Riverside Drive with a commanding view of the James River from virtually every area of the house. The house has an interesting mix of materials-- brick, stone, wood and glass and stucco. These materials enhance the expansive appearance of this mostly one-level home. Floor to ceiling windows are used on both ends of the house. The center portion has a row of elevated clerestory windows which are repeated in a similar fashion on the second floor left wing. The roof line alternates from flat to A-frame giving an interesting view of both the elevation and facade. House continues to echo some Usonian features in its layout and strong connection to outdoor spaces. Landscaping has randomly placed boulders, large mature trees and some delicate Japanese maples.
