Richmond Mid Century # 7
3540 Floyd Avenue

This structure currently serves as a doctors' office and has done so for decades. Although not a house, the architecture of this building begs to be added to the list. The current owner regularly gets offers to purchase. So far, the answer is NO. The building is a marvelous example of Case Study structures of the 1950s and early 1960s. The building is circular with offices that fan out from a central core. Typical mixed materials were used : block, brick, wood, steel and glass. Entryway is recessed with enormous solid wood double doors. The street facade has curved walls constructed of hand-formed concrete blocks of a single pattern. The back circle is formed with vertical lumber and clerestory windows and a generous overhang which wards off glaring sunlight during business hours. On each side of the half circles are two brick enclosed Asian Gardens which can be viewed from the offices. The original paint colors of aqua and salmon pink have been retained. It is rumored that one of the Watergate Complex architects designed this unusual buildings.
