Bud Hyland designed various homes in Richmond including this quintessential 1950 mid century. The house has a modified butterfly roof which soars above and connects to several flat roofs. Banks of clerestory and long, vertical windows begin at one end of the L-shape and move laterally along the facade to the back of the house. Private spaces have high windows and public spaces offer park-like views of the out-of-doors. Wall cutouts and vertical planking elongate the house elevation. Spare, well spaced plants soften hardscape stone and bricks. Blue stone paves a covered car park. Architectural elements are repeated along the sides and back of the home where a stone-paved patio opens to a canopy of trees. Classically and beautifully mid century!
